How to Apply Sunscreen

Proper application of sunscreen is essential in order for it to provide maximum protection. It is best utilized as just one aspect of a regime that includes avoiding sun at peak hours whenever possible and wearing protective clothing.
First: Apply sunscreen before sun exposure
Apply sunscreen from 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun. With the exception of pure zinc oxide which works immediately upon application, sunscreen must absorb into the skin before it produces the desired effect.
Second: Apply sunscreen liberally
Sunscreen must completely cover the exposed area of skin in order to protect it. About an ounce of sunscreen is sufficient to cover the entire body of most people.
Third: Carefully apply to all exposed areas of skin
Certain parts of the body are easily missed and are badly sunburned such as ears, fingers and toes. These areas need full protection, and it is important that they are treated carefully during the application of sunscreen. The face must also have sunscreen applied even when a hat and sunglasses are worn as reflected sunlight can also damage. With movement, the hat does not always protect the face from the sun because the visor only covers a certain ratio of the face.
Fourth: Reapply sunscreen regularly
Sunscreens all differ, and it is important to read the instructions as to how often to use the sunscreen throughout the day. Two hours is typically the maximum amount of time any sunscreen is effective, and it should reapply as often as every fifteen minutes with water exposure.
